Hydrotech's Thermaflo® - Protection, Drainage & Insulation

Thermaflo       Installation of Thermaflo

Thermaflo combines the excellent thermal protection of STYROFOAM® insulation with efficient drainage and top-notch protection to the waterproofing membrane - all in a single product. This 3 in 1, multi-purpose product is particularly well suited to below grade vertical foundation walls.

Advantages...

  • High compressive strength can withstand the pressure imposed by soil over time, while simultaneously maintaining high drainage rates.
  • Drainage channels are protected from soil particle entry and clogging due to overlapping filtration fabric at all edges.
  • Economical, fast, straightforward installation, eliminates the need to install a separate protection layer and a drainage course product.

Composition and Materials...

Thermaflo panels are 2 ft. x 8 ft. Dow STYROFOAM® extruded polystyrene foam insulation with horizontal and vertical drainage channels on one side, covered by spun-bonded polyester fabric.  Tongue and groove edges along all sides allow each board to be interlocked during installation, creating a continuous thermal and drainage barrier.

Types...

Available in three types, each with a choice of thickness, Thermaflo is selected according to the anticipated amount of pressure exerted by the soil or backfill and by the desired thermal value.

Type 750 has a compressive strength of 2160 psf, and is sold in three thicknesses: 1 inch (R=4.4), 1.25 inches (R=6.9) and 2.25 inches (R=10.6). Type 2160 has a flow rate of 9.5 gpm/ft.

Type 1250 carries a higher compressive strength of 3460 psf, and is sold in thicknesses of 1.5 inches (R=6.9) and 2.25 inches (R=10.6). Type 3460 has a flow rate of 12gpm/ft.

Type 1750 has the highest compressive strength of 5180 psf and also comes in two thicknesses: 1.5 inches (R=6.9) and 2.25 inches (R=10.6). Type 5180 has a flow rate of 12 gpm/ft.

(Flow rates are per ASTM D 4716, with a load of 500 lb./s.f. Also, a 3:1 design factor is recommended to prevent compressive creep.)
